Remove AI Formatting From Text
Last updated: August 28, 2026
AI text comes with formatting baggage: markdown markers, smart quotes, em dashes, invisible characters and doubled whitespace. Paste it into a CMS or a codebase and it misbehaves. ClearPaste strips the clutter — in seconds, in your browser.
What "AI formatting" is
- Markdown clutter — headings (#), bold/italic asterisks, bullets, code fences that survive the copy
- Smart typography — curly quotes, em/en dashes, ellipses, non-breaking spaces
- Invisible characters — zero-width spaces, joiners, BOMs, bidi marks (emoji-safe removal)
- Whitespace — trailing spaces, doubled blank lines
Each one is harmless on screen and hostile in the systems you paste into: search, regex, JSON, CSVs, CMS editors and version control. The invisible-character piece has its own guide — remove invisible characters → — and so does the em dash — remove em dashes →.
Every artifact ClearPaste removes, in one table
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini — all the same problem
Every major AI platform adds its own flavor of formatting layer. The copy-paste result picks up markdown from ChatGPT, stylistic dashes from Claude, and invisible characters from chat interfaces and PDFs. The fix is the same regardless of source: normalize the text before it goes anywhere important.
- ChatGPT — markdown-heavy output: headings, bold, bulleted lists and code fences survive the copy.
- Claude — typographic styling: em dashes and curly quotes are a signature of its writing style.
- Gemini — invisible contamination: zero-width characters and non-breaking spaces from chat interfaces and PDF exports.
What breaks when you don't clean
- A CMS that renders markdown literally — users see "##" and "**" instead of formatted headings.
- Notion and Google Docs auto-lists — pasted "- item" lines become bullet lists you didn't ask for.
- Code that parses text — JSON with curly quotes fails; regex against smart dashes misses matches.
- Version control diffs — trailing whitespace and invisible characters create noise in every commit.
Here's a realistic before/after:
Before: "## Meeting notes — “decided” to ship next week…"
After: "Meeting notes - "decided" to ship next week..."

How do I clean AI text?
Paste it into ClearPaste. The tool strips markdown clutter, normalizes smart quotes and dashes, removes invisible characters (emoji-safe) and fixes whitespace — then you copy the clean result.
Is ClearPaste an AI remover?
It removes what AI leaves behind: markdown clutter, smart quotes, em dashes and invisible characters. It does not "remove AI" from the meaning of your words — it removes the formatting layer that makes AI text look and behave differently.
Does ClearPaste work for ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini?
Yes. All three platforms add formatting artifacts to copied output, and ClearPaste cleans them with the same rules.
Will cleaning remove markdown headings?
Yes — headings, bullets, asterisks and code fences are stripped by default. Every rule is a toggle on the homepage tool, so you can keep the formatting you want.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Every transform runs as JavaScript in your browser. Your text is never sent to a server, logged or stored anywhere.
Does cleaning AI text remove watermarks?
Cleaning removes formatting and Unicode artifacts. Statistical watermarks are a different layer and can't be removed by a browser tool. See the honest breakdown →
