Remove Invisible Characters & Hidden Unicode

Last updated: August 28, 2026

Invisible characters are in your text but not on your screen. They break search, break regex, break string comparisons and turn clean-looking copy into a debugging nightmare. Here's how to find them and remove them.

What are invisible characters?

These characters have no visible glyph — you can't see them when you read the text, but they're there:

They typically arrive via copy-paste from AI chat interfaces, PDFs, translation tools and some editors. Zero-width characters are the most common offender — see the dedicated zero-width remover →

Why they're a problem

The emoji trap

Naive "remove invisible characters" tools strip all zero-width joiners — which shatters emoji like 👨👩👧👦 into separate symbols. ClearPaste is emoji-safe: it removes invisible characters while preserving the joiners that keep emoji sequences intact. Try it on the homepage →

How to remove invisible characters

  1. Paste your text into the cleaner above (or the full tool on the homepage).
  2. Use Reveal hidden on the homepage to see exactly where the invisible characters are — each one is labeled (ZWSP, LRM, SHY…).
  3. Click copy and paste the clean text anywhere.

Everything runs in your browser. Your text never leaves your device. Invisible characters are only one part of the AI formatting problem — see the full cleanup →

Word joinerU+2060Invisible; prevents line breaks
BOMU+FEFFByte-order mark; appears at the start of copied files
Soft hyphenU+00ADInvisible hyphenation hint from word processors

Invisible math operatorsU+2061–4, U+206A–FInvisible times, plus, separator — copied from math editors

ClearPaste removes all of these while preserving the joiners that keep emoji sequences intact.

What happens when you don't remove them

Here's what the tool changes — the example looks identical on screen:

Before (with U+200B after "code"): "This code breaks search."

After: "This code breaks search."

Use Reveal hidden on the homepage to see exactly where each one sits before you clean.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find invisible characters in my text?

Paste the text into ClearPaste and hit Reveal hidden — every invisible character is highlighted and labeled (ZWSP, LRM, SHY and more) with its Unicode codepoint.

What is a zero-width space?

A zero-width space (U+200B) is a Unicode character that takes up no visible space. It's invisible when reading but present in the data — and it breaks search and string matching.

Will removing invisible characters break emoji?

Not with ClearPaste. The tool preserves zero-width joiners inside emoji sequences, so 👨👩👧👦 stays intact while stray invisible characters are removed.

Does ClearPaste upload my text?

No. Every transform runs as JavaScript in your browser. Your text is never sent to a server, logged or stored anywhere.

Are invisible characters the same as an AI watermark?

No. Invisible Unicode characters are formatting artifacts. Statistical AI watermarks (like Claude's planned watermark or SynthID) are embedded in how text is generated, not in its characters. See the full breakdown →
